The subject is too vast that I am forced to confine myself to a few traditional treatments special to Kerala. Dhara (dripping), pizhichil (a form of body irrigation with warm oil), navarakizhi (fomentation with navara rice cooked in milk and decoction), navaratheppu (anointment with a paste made of navara rice powder cooked in milk and decoction), talam (application of medicated pastes on the vertex) and thalapothichil (covering the head with medicated paste) are some of them.

Origin of Ayurveda

Origin of Ayurveda

Ayurveda in its real meaning is a way of life, a philosophy and a science of healing and health care. As a medicinal knowledge, it originates from two distinct dominions, folk wisdom and scientific knowledge. Tradition attributes the origin of Ayurveda from the creator itself. Ayurveda is the collection of the principles of life that took birth with the world itself and is believed not liable to change at any time or in any part of the world. Although Ayurveda put across antiquity, authenticity and efficacy, the tradition does not determine the source of knowledge, nor does it suggests any precise date of origin. The claimed deity of this celestial science is Lord Dhanwanthari, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Extricating the Hidden Treasures of Ayurveda Through Innovative Research

Ayurveda is the ancient medical wisdom, indigenous to India. The literature available, are in Sanskrit that is an oldest language, which makes the basis for various other languages.

The principles of Ayurveda are even to day adaptable and standardized in their own approach. With the advent of the modern sciences and technologies such as the influence of modern chemistry, the majority of our understanding/knowledge became provable using modern methods and measures. Similarly even Ayurveda knowledge was also questioned for its scientific basis. As a result, there came into existence much new research, especially in the area of medicinal plants.
