Ash gourd, also known as white gourd or wax gourd is an annual, hairy, creeping herb. Modern study has confirmed its effectiveness in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate enlargement.

The pumpkin seed oil, when used in combination with saw palmetto in human studies, showed effective reduction in symptoms of BPH. Researchers suggest zinc free fatty acid, or plant sterol content of pumpkin seed may prove beneficial in men with BPH. Studies have shown that the pumpkin seed extracts can improve functioning of the bladder and urethra, which might help in achieving BPH symptom relief.

Much has been heard and proven about the benefits of coffee on health during recent times. People have moved on from their belief during early days that coffee does not do anything more than just giving that jolt of energy due to its caffeine content. Several studies have now confirmed that drinking moderate amounts of coffee (4-5 cups a day) can reduce risks of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, liver cirrhosis, colon cancer, skin cancer, gallstones and Alzheimer’s disease.

Coffee has now gained grounds in beauty treatments too. But the goodness of coffee can be obtained only from the powder obtained from real coffee beans, and not the instant coffee powder available in local markets.

According to the latest research published in the British Journal of Cancer, chemicals in Cannabis have been found to stop the growth of Prostate Cancer cells, which suggests that Cannabis-based medicines can help fight the disease.

Cannabis sativa is an herb used by humans as a source of fiber, as food, as a drug, as medicine and for spiritual purposes too. The preparations made out of flowers of this plant are known as marijuana.


Indian Govt. approves use Ayurveda to combat flu-like diseases

Central Ministry in India said that Ayurveda and Unani interventions could be used to bolster immunity to combat several flu-like conditions.The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry at New Delhi, arrived at this decision, after taking into account the expert opinion received by the Department of AYUSH. The department has formed group of experts for suggesting interventions through Indian systems of medicine, which could be used in the prevention/treatment of flu-like diseases. The group includes Ayurveda experts, physicians from government hospitals and private sector, and from research councils.

The experts are of the opinion that viral epidemics are classified under the “Vaata Kaphaja Jwara” category, as mentioned in Charak Samhita and such other Ayurvedic text books, and that several types of flu and viral fevers fall under this category.
